Message from Chief of Army Lieutenant-General David Morrison to the Australian Army following the announcement on 13 June 2013 of civilian police and Defense investigations into allegations of unacceptable behavior [sexual harassment on the Web] by Army members.
This video is from last Spring. Lieutenant General David Morrison is so amazing and impressive in getting his message across in no uncertain terms.
Note this statement:
"Show moral courage….The standard you walk past is the standard you accept"
About the time that this video was released, the US Congress was not showing moral courage in revising procedures in the US Armed Forces to handle crimes like sexual assault and harassment of women. In the US military, officers with rank above the accused or proven offender have the authority to dismiss charges against these men.
In Australia, the approach to the same offenses is zero tolerance.
Whenever I watch this video, as a woman it amazes and empowers me. I have never been in any military setting, but I have experienced sexual harassment and it is utterly demeaning and damaging from an emotional and mental standpoint. Sexual assault is even worse, because the woman’s body is violated as well as her mind and emotions. In my situation, nothing substantive was done; in fact, I was eventually pushed out the door. This has been the experience of many women in the US Armed Forces.
I need to do my homework, but as far as I know, despite hearing after hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, according to women in the military who has seen or experienced these offenses, the procedure in the US to handle these crimes effectively remains the same as before.
We need our own David Morrison….
